Koi Herpes Virus found in Jersey

22 August 2016

A case of Koi Herpes Virus (KHV) has been confirmed in Jersey.

The virus causes disease in common carp including Koi, mostly in summer. Fish may be lethargic and have sunken eyes with sudden death of many fish in an affected collection. The fish may also have gill damage.

Fish that survive an outbreak may carry the infection, spreading it to others.
It does not affect humans or other fish species.  At the moment, no treatment is available.

Islanders are being strongly advised not to move fish from pond to pond unless it is essential and to make sure that nets or other equipment are adequately cleaned, disinfected and dried before their use elsewhere. Ornamental fish or water from fish collections must not be released into natural waterways.

KHV is a notifiable disease and if anybody suspects they may have it in their fish you must inform the States Vet.

Call the States Vet on +44(0)1534 441600.
