Who owns registration numbers

Registration numbers are the property of the Government of Jersey.

However, the Inspector of Motor Traffic may allow the exchange or retention of registration numbers in certain circumstances.

Keep a registration number

Registration numbers can be retained at anytime, including when the vehicle is being:

  • permanently exported
  • scrapped
  • sold

As the registered owner of a vehicle you can retain the use of a registration number for £104 per 6 month period.

If the registration number is granted to a different person, the initial retention fee is £120.50.

To keep your registration number you need to:

  • complete the application for the exchange, retention, change or withdrawal of a motor vehicle registration mark (VRD28)
  • complete the vehicle's original registration document (VRD1)
  • pay the fee

Send your completed documents to Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS).

You can pay by card, cash or cheque (payable to the Treasurer of the States). Do not send cash in the post.
