British Irish Council Summit in Cardiff

20 February 2009

Jersey’s Chief Minister and the Minister for Treasury and Resources have today, Friday 20th February 2009, been addressing the twelfth British Irish Council summit, held at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff.

During his speech, Senator Philip Ozouf outlined Jersey’s support for Prime Minister, Gordon Brown’s recent call for measures which ensured consistent regulation in all offshore jurisdictions

The summit’s theme was social inclusion and, in particular, the contribution which the voluntary and community sector can make to helping vulnerable people in society during the economic downturn.

Speaking after the event, Senator Terry Le Sueur said: “We had a very positive discussion at today’s summit about the economic issues faced by all members of the British Irish Council. I think there was a recognition that although we each have our own problems, we need to work together to achieve a common solution.”

Senator Le Sueur also said he was looking forward to welcoming delegates to the next summit, which will be held in Jersey in October 2009.

The BIC is the only international organisation that Jersey belongs to in its own right rather than through the UK. Members also include the Scottish government, the Welsh Assembly, the Irish government, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, the Northern Ireland executive and the British government.
