Guernsey Commerce and Employment and Jersey Economic Development to Join Forces

05 June 2009

Guernsey’s Commerce and Employment Department and Jersey’s Economic Development Department have held their first joint meeting to explore areas where greater co-operation would be to the mutual benefit of both Islands.

The first meeting, held on 5 May 2009, was used as an introduction to share and discuss aims, objectives and challenges across various aspects of commerce, employment and economic development.

Deputy Carla McNulty Bauer, Minister for Guernsey Commerce and Employment said: “I am pleased to say that there is a commitment from both sides for a series of regular meetings.  There are undoubtedly a number of issues across the States of Guernsey and Jersey where closer working could prove beneficial.  We now need to prioritise issues that have clear synergies, from our respective mandates, so these can be discussed from a pan island perspective.”

It is intended that both Departments will meet again within the next two months to maintain momentum.

Senator Alan Maclean, Minister for Jersey Economic Development Department commented:

“There are areas where the Islands can and should work more closely together for mutual benefit and I am sure that other departments will follow this initiative.

We had a very constructive and positive initial meeting and I look forward to building on that during the next few months.”

It is the intention of Guernsey Commerce and Employment and Jersey Economic Development to release updates of discussion topics covered at the meetings and the outcomes of the collaborative deliberations.
