New hospital managing director starts next week

30 April 2010

Health and Social Services has appointed a hospital managing director for an interim period to oversee Jersey’s General Hospital.

Andrew McLaughlin starts work in the Island next week (4 May). Until February, he was the chief operating officer of Oxford Radcliffe Hospital. He also worked in senior positions in healthcare at Colchester University Hospital and Essex Rivers Healthcare NHS Trust, St Mary’s Hospital NHS Trust, Paddington and the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals in London.

He has undertaken the Sloan Fellowship at the London Business School, during which he conducted research for the Cabinet Office into leadership development across the public sector. Prior to working in healthcare, he was a former military pilot and commanding officer in the RAF and served in the Gulf War.

Speaking about his appointment, he said "I am delighted to join the team in Jersey. I think it will be an exciting and challenging role and I look forward to bringing my experience to the General Hospital."

It is hoped that the appointment of a managing director at the General Hospital, one of the recommendations from the Verita Report, will strengthen the current management structure at the Hospital. Responsibilities will include delivering efficiencies as part of the Comprehensive Spending Review and addressing issues around bed capacity. In June, new chief executive officer, Julie Garbutt, starts work.

Acting chief officer of HSSD, Richard Jouault, said “We look forward to welcoming Andrew to the senior management team at Health and Social Services. The appointment of a hospital managing director is an important one. The post holder will work closely with the directorate managers, clinical directors and senior colleagues to lead the General Hospital through the challenging months ahead.”

Minister for Health and Social Services, Deputy Anne Pryke, added “Andrew will be a welcome addition to the senior managemen team, who are actively engaged in the continual implementation of the Verita recommendations.”
