Advance to Work Christmas stall

05 December 2012

Advance to Work trainees and mentors will be selling homemade Christmas gifts and decorations at the General Hospital on 19 December in aid of their nominated charity for 2012, Help a Jersey Child.

A group of five trainees organised the stall as part of Advance to Work’s annual Christmas drive to raise money for the employment scheme’s chosen charity.

With the help of their Advance to Work mentors, the trainees made the goods which will be on sale and had a hand in co-ordinating the event, from calling potential venues to designing posters and taking orders for decorations sold in advance of the Christmas stall.

Advance to Work trainee Josh Roberts said "We volunteered to do this because we want to gain experience of event planning, working in the community and raising funds for charity. We also want to show the general public that we are caring and capable young people."

Advance to Work Manager Shelley Regal said the aim of Advance to Work was to help young people improve the skills and confidence that will help them in the workplace and there are many aspects of voluntary work and fundraising activity which contribute to that.

"Advance to Work combines training, mentoring and work placements to help young people make the step from full time education to employment and organising this event has helped them gain valuable workplace skills and experience event-planning first-hand. This is also their final opportunity to raise funds for the charity the trainees have chosen to support in 2012," said Mrs Regal.

The trainees will be in the foyer of the General Hospital between 10 am and noon on 19 December and all proceeds will be donated to Help a Jersey Child.
