Zero-hours contract guide issued

06 May 2015

A guide to zero-hours contracts is now available, providing clear information about their appropriate use and the rights of individuals who are employed under them.

The guide has been has been prepared by the Jersey Advisory and Conciliation Service (JACS) in conjunction with the Social Security Department.

The Minister for Social Security, Deputy Susie Pinel, said she was pleased that more information was now available.

"The guide makes it easy for Jersey employers to check that they are using the right type of contracts and reverse any poor practice,” she said.

The new JACS guide gives:

  • an explanation of the term zero-hours contract and the principles around how such contracts work
  • a flowchart to assist a business in deciding whether a zero-hours contract is the right type of contract for the work they have available
  • a template for written terms and conditions that would apply when zero-hours contract work is appropriate

JACS provides a wealth of support to employers, including an outreach service for small organisations which helps them comply with the essential requirements of the Employment Law, such as providing staff with appropriate contracts and pay slips.

The guide, and original report, are available to download.
