International driving permit applications open

01 March 2019

Islanders can now apply for an international driving permit (IDP) which has been introduced in response to Brexit.

The 1968 Vienna Convention IDP will ensure that Jersey motorists can continue to drive in the EU after 29 March. If the UK negotiations result in a no deal, or a ‘hard’ Brexit, Jersey motorists may need an IDP when driving in the EU.

Applications are now being taken, and Vienna Convention IDPs will be distributed from next Friday, 8 March.

This is the third kind of international driving permit to be introduced in Jersey. The 1949 Geneva Convention and 1926 Paris Convention IDPs will continue to enable motorists to drive in other jurisdictions around the world, meaning that some drivers will require more than one IDP if they wish to drive in multiple countries.

Anyone who holds a full, valid Jersey driving licence can use a single application form to apply for all three IDPs, which cost £10 each. The form lists where each IDP is required and is available online and from parish halls. It should be submitted to the parish hall in which the licensee lives.

Since Jersey is following the UK in signing the Vienna Convention, the UK Post Office’s online guide to IDPs can be used by islanders to check the IDPs used in the countries they’re planning to visit.

Jersey has become a signatory of the Vienna Convention to ensure that Jersey motorists can continue driving across Europe, regardless of Brexit. In becoming a signatory, Jersey has also committed to:

- extending vehicle roadworthiness inspections
- introducing trailer registration
- extending the wearing of seatbelts to commercial vehicles

DVS is on schedule to have all the elements completed in time for Brexit.
