A licensing scheme which will ensure that commercial vehicles meet minimum standards is being presented to Jersey’s haulage industry this week.
Businesses will be able to find out more about the Commercial Vehicle Operator Licensing Scheme at the Royal Jersey Showground between 9am and 5pm on Wednesday, 6 November. Officers from Driver and Vehicle Standards will be there to explain how operators will be able to obtain a licence, which is intended to:
- improve and promote vehicle road safety;
- ensure that all commercially-operated good vehicles and trailers are maintained and operated to set standards; and
- improve the environmental credentials for the vehicles.
Senior Traffic Officer Piers Tharme said: “We have been working with the industry since 2015 to ensure that this scheme is workable, provides a level playing field for the whole industry, and ensures that all goods vehicles on Jersey’s roads are maintained to set standards.
“Since our last engagement with the industry, we have been working on the policy that underpins the legislative changes needed to ensure that the scheme meets the Island’s needs, and we’ve taken into account the feedback we received. On Wednesday, we’ll be giving the industry guidance on where we are on our journey towards its implementation.”
An hour-long presentation is being given at 10am and again at 2pm. At other times, officers will be available to chat about the scheme.
“Anyone who is interested is very welcome to come along, but we particularly want operators, subcontractors, partner companies and anyone else involved to drop in. The event is free, and we’re asking people to register on
Eventbrite so that we have an idea of numbers,” Mr Tharme said.
About the Commercial Vehicle Operators Licence Scheme
Any business operating any of the following in connection with a trade, profession or business will need an operator’s licence:
- goods vehicles with a gross vehicle weight greater than 3,500 kg (but not a passenger-carrying vehicle)
- semi-trailers
- draw bar trailers with an unladen weight of greater than 1,020kg
An operator’s licence is not needed for agricultural motor vehicles, agricultural tractors, trailers or trailed appliances.
