Opportunities and services
We are committed to reducing reoffending and ensuring prisoners’ time at La Moye is used constructively. Our aim is for people to serve their sentence, and upon release are able contribute to society and avoid the risk of committing another crime and being sent back to prison.
Some of the services and opportunities that are offered to achieve this outcome include:
- educational courses
- 1 to 1 and group therapy work
- physical education courses
- gym and sports sessions
- vocational qualification courses
- daily healthcare and pharmacy service
All prisoners will meet with a member of our prison education department within 2 weeks of coming into prison. You will be shown the facilities and asked about your education and work background. We encourage all new prisoners to take literacy and numeracy tests so that we can help them find courses at the right level.
Basic skills
Prisoners can take lessons in basic English and Maths, and also have the chance to take adult literacy and numeracy exams.
We also offer the ‘Toe by Toe’ scheme, where the mentors are prisoners who are trained to encourage and support other prisoners with little or no reading skills.
ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
We offer weekly lessons for prisoners who speak English as a second language.
Prisoners can sit exams in English from beginner to advanced levels.
Computer skills
We offer training and support for prisoners to take:
- the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)
- level 1 qualifications in IT through the National Open College Network
ECDL is an internationally recognised qualification which allows you to demonstrate your computer skills. Prisoners can get help and support with ECDL and basic computer skills in the prison's library and education centre (LEC).
Open learning
Our open learning tutor helps prisoners to find distance learning courses and supports them on these courses.
All prisoners who want to start a distance learning course must take literacy and numeracy tests so that we can find them a course at the right level.
Art courses
We offer an ongoing programme of art lessons and prisoners can study towards a National Open College Network Diploma in art.
The prison holds a yearly art exhibition which is open to the public.
Trade workshops and qualifications
We offer prisoners courses in:

We continually develop these courses to match prisoners’ needs and interests.
