Household and commercial rubbish that has not been separated for recycling is delivered to the Energy Recovery Facility at La Collette for processing. This forms part of the Island's solid waste strategy which delivers a partnership between local energy recovery and recycling.
The Energy Recovery Facility is for commercial customers only.
Jersey does not landfill any waste. An exception is waste material from construction which is stored in specially built cells at La Collette. This includes the Islands Asbestos storage.
How the facility works In basic terms, an Energy Recovery Facility burns rubbish and uses the heat from the fire to generate steam. This steam is then used to drive a turbine which generates electricity which is sold to the Jersey Electricity Company (JEC).
The process also produces an ash called Incinerator Bottom Ash. This is sent to the UK where it can be recycled into a building material. Watch the video below to find out more.

Monitoring the facility The Planning and Environment Department granted a Waste Management Licence on 15 December 2010 to the plant operator, the Department for Infrastructure. This brings the operation of the facility under the regulatory control of the Waste Management (Jersey) Law 2005, for which the Planning and Environment Department is the regulator. The facility is constantly monitored to ensure it operates in accordance with the licence and EU air quality standards.
