About the consultation

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) have been tasked with delivering the Sustainable Transport Policy, which includes improving pedestrian facilities and safety.

We are proposing changes along Gloucester Street and The Parade and would like your comments. We anticipate constructing these in late spring / early summer 2013, at the same time that we resurface and strengthen the road.

Proposal 1: Gloucester Street and Newgate Street

The proposal in the first drawing shows:
  • a widening of the pavement on Newgate Street at the junction with Gloucester Street. This will mean that pedestrians only need to cross one lane of traffic and will be better seen by motorists
  • a widening of the pavement on Gloucester Street between The Parade and the entrance to Spectrum, reducing the crossing distance across Gloucester Street. The existing cycle stands will be repositioned on the new section of footway

Proposal 2: The Parade and Gloucester Street north

The proposal in the second drawing shows:
  • improvements to the pedestrian crossing, bringing it closer to the Hospital's main and Accident and Emergency entrances
  • road markings on the carriageway between the traffic lane and the parked cars to provide a buffer zone, increasing the safety of passengers as they get out of vehicles
  • a larger traffic island at the junction of Gloucester Street and The Parade to provide pedestrians with more space and a shorter crossing

The drawing also shows proposed improvements to Gloucester Street north of The Parade:

  • reducing the road width to a single lane to make crossing safer and more convenient for pedestrians
  • no change to the motorcycle parking
  • providing additional parking spaces by changing to chevron parking
