The Seabird Working Group was established in March 2009, following discussions regarding the declining population of puffins on the north coast. The group provides a forum for discussion and policy development on issues related to seabirds and the habitats they need for survival.
The group generally meets twice a year to discuss ongoing issues, such as:
- collecting and collating seabird monitoring data
- devising seabird monitoring programmes
- establishing voluntary exclusion zones in coastal locations during breeding seasons
- creating proactive media and public awareness
- wildlife crime and its policing
- assessment of predators
- impacts of commercial boat operators
Membership of the group is not set and new members are very welcome. Currently the following organisations are represented within the group:
- Department of the Environment
- Société Jersiaise – Ornithology and Marine Biology sections
- National Trust
- Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust
- Jersey Fishermen’s Association
- Jersey Recreational Fishermen’s Association
- Greve de Lecq Boat Owners Association
- Jersey Canoe Club
- Les Écréhous Residents Association
