The Health and Safety Inspectorate is pleased to announce that the revised ACoP ‘Safe use of rider-operated lift trucks’ has been approved by the Minister for Social Security and will come into effect on 1 November 2022.
This Approved Code of Practice, ACoP 6, replaces the previous edition of the ‘Safe use of rider operated lift trucks which came into force on 22 November 2001 and was due revision. Whilst retaining the overall principles of the previous edition, the revised AcoP has taken into account up to date authorative guidance published by the UK HSE, representative industry bodies and Jersey Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS).
Local stakeholders were invited to comment on the draft revised ACoP earlier in the year. Submissions and suggestions received were taken into account when publishing the final document.
Every year activities involving forklift truck (FLT) operations result in serious accidents and injuries in Jersey. By the nature of the work, FLT operators carry out high-risk work, often in unfamiliar and / or changing environments and without direct supervision. The ACoP is intended to provide refreshed practical guidance on how to address the well-recognised dangers associated with the use of rider-operated lift trucks.
The revised ACoP does not come into force until 1 November 2022. However, it is now available on our website for use by those with responsibility for the safe operation of rider-operated lift trucks.
A printed version will be available for collection from the Health and Safety Inspectorate at Maritime House shortly.
