Reporting unsafe gas work

21 November 2023

The Health and Safety Inspectorate (HSI) is reminding gas engineers, and those who work with gas, to report any concerns they have about dangerous gas work. Whether it is a concern about illegal gas work or unsafe work completed by a registered engineer, they should report it to the Gas Safe Register.

In England, Scotland, and Wales there is a requirement for gas engineers to report any gas fittings, including appliances and flues or ventilation used with appliances, that they believe to be dangerous. Although there are no reporting regulations in Jersey, gas businesses and engineers are encouraged to voluntarily report matters of concern to the Health and Safety Inspectorate (HSI) by email at hsi@gov.je

If a gas leak is suspected, or in an emergency, Island Energy should be notified immediately on +44 (0)1534 755555, which is a 24 hour emergency service.

For more information about gas safety and compliance with the Health and Safety at Work (Jersey) Law, 1989, there is a locally produced Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) for the Safe Work with Gas Systems and Appliances.

The Gas ACoP includes a requirement that engineers working in Jersey are assessed as competent by completion of an Accredited Certification Scheme and are registered with the approved body, currently the Gas Safe Register.
