What is the GST payments system?
The GST payments system, also known as CAESAR, is an online service for individuals and businesses to pay GST on goods that they’ve bought online for over £240.
The existing system that was used to collect duty on things like fuel, wine and spirits was modified to also collect GST when it was first introduced in 2008.
Why we needed to update the GST payments system
The system was upgraded over the years, but the look and feel was not.
This meant customers had a poor experience when trying to pay their GST on mobiles and tablets.
Benefits of the updated system
The updated system:
gives customers a clear declaration and payment process that has the same look and feel as gov.je
works on mobile and tablet devices
improves the user experience
reduces the number of calls from customers struggling to complete payments
speeds up the clearance of goods
reduces the need for us to tell customers when their goods are detained because they haven’t paid GST
results in less time being tied up in admin, and more time for valuable activities
Challenges we faced
We had to give the system the same look and feel as other pages on gov.je, which was tricky.
We had to work closely with the internal web team, and the existing developer of CAESAR, Teleologica, to improve the customer experience.
What’s next?
The updated CAESAR system is live, and we’re monitoring customer feedback to make improvements if needed.
