Request

I am looking for a particular piece of statistical information. I want to know what percentage of the resident population of Jersey held bank accounts. I would imagine that the States would have neded some idea of this for the purposes of collecting tax and/or disbursing pensions and (later) social security payments. Ideally, I am looking for a run of data points between 1945 and 1980, sampled at 5 year intervals (so 1945, 1950, 1955 etc). However, if this is too much to ask, I am happy to reduce my request to one data point, that for 1960. (I specifically want 1960 to provide context for some private research).

Response

The Taxes Office does not hold the statistics requested on current or deposit accounts.

Individual taxpayers are required to declare all investment income on their tax returns which would include bank deposit interest, but this data is not sufficient for the purposes of answering your question.

As part of your request, we asked our Statistical unit if this was something which they may be able to assist with and the only data which they can provide is available on page 17 of the JASS 2014 report (below):

“Banking and loans
A very small percentage (less than 1%) of households reported being unable to get a current account with a household bank.”
