Request
Please could you provide stats for number of suicides, number of suicidal attempts & number of people treated for self-harm over the past 5 years. The information available is only based on actual suicides (death by misadventures) up to 2016. Please provide up to and including interim 2018.
Response
The latest information on suicides is available in public reports on mortality:
Jersey Mortality statistics 2017
Data is in arrears as deaths suspected to be by suicide need to have completed the inquest process before the cause of death is confirmed.
Attendances at Jersey General Hospital Emergency Department treated for self-harm:
Self-Harm | 199 | 196 | 160 | 210 | 198 | 157 |
Attempted Suicide (included in the self-harm figures above) | 30 | 28 | 35 | 27 | 34 | 32 |
This shows all attendances at the Emergency Department where the patient's diagnosis category was recorded as attempted suicide or deliberate self-harm. In addition, some individuals had a diagnosis category of psychiatric, where the more detailed Emergency Department diagnosis field showed that some self-harm had occurred (for example where the main concern was psychiatric, but lacerations were also recorded). These numbers use the same definition as published in the Mental Health Quality report and dashboards:
