On the 16 April 2018 and 25 April 2018, the Freedom of Information Department published two documents Jersey Coin Sets and Jersey Coin mintage:

What was the mintage of the Jersey 2014 and 2016 50p coins? The response was 2014 - 480,000 and 2016 - 120,000

25th April Request

The response in relation to 50p coins was 2104 - 240,000 and 2016 - 240,000

I would like to know the correct figures and will these documents be amended , if found to be incorrect

Thank you for bringing to our attention differences in the reported mintage figures for the Jersey 2014 and 2016 50p.

The differences have occurred because in preparing responses different departments have interpreted ‘minting’ to have occurred at different points during the coinage process.

The three dates a coin might be deemed minted are as follows:

• the date a coin is physically stamped; or

• the date the coinage was ordered; or

• the date coinage was received, receipted and paid for

There can at times be a significant lag between the order of a coin, and the date coins are received, depending on how active the printing presses are. Furthermore, if a limited run of coins are ordered it might not be cost effective to commission new ‘moulds’ with an updated year, so the date a coin is ordered / printed may not correspond to the year the coin is stamped.

For example, a coin may be printed with the date 2014, be ordered in 2015 and received in 2016. Depending on which data source the information is collated, coins may be deemed ‘minted’ in 2014, 2015 or 2016.

Although the above may result in timing differences the record of the total value of coins issued remains consistent.

The record of coinage issued has been re-reviewed to ensure consistent application of terms. Replies going forward will be collated from a single source to remain consistent.

The updated table below applies the dates coins were received, receipted and paid for. The table also separately reconciles this to the dates the coins were physically stamped.
