Response

Year group capacity for the four 11-16 non fee-paying Government of Jersey Secondary schools is agreed as part of the Primary to Secondary transfer process and is based on form entries rather than class sizes. Form entries in secondary school year groups are allocated based on multiples of 25 but can be exceeded by 1 child per 25 for children living in the catchment area (this is referred to as ‘stretch capacity’). The policy is available at the following link:
School Admissions to Non Fee Paying Secondary Schools - Policy

However, in 2018 there was an increase in the number of students living in the catchment area requesting school places at Les Quennevais School. Therefore, the Department’s Senior Management Team agreed to increase the school numbers, at Les Quennevais, to the maximum that the school could physically accommodate. The school timetable (lesson plans and teaching resources) were then put in place to offer a maximum of 168 students places at the school.

168 students started in Year 7 in September 2018 and this number has remained fairly static. The school timetable for this cohort (now Year 9) continues to be based on a maximum of 168 students, current numbers are 167 due to a recent leaver. The waiting list for Year 9 has been reviewed recently and the allocation process for the 168th place started.
