*Hours reflect change of prisoner regime, staff related absence and inability to bring in external parties to deliver input, all in line with Government of Jersey guidelines.

The hours are calculated by hours accessed then divided into the average population per year.

Functional Skills – every Tuesday and Friday – one hour each day per week

Carpentry – Monday to Friday daily tuition – 08:30-15:45

Horticulture – Monday to Friday daily tuition – 08:30-15:45

Catering – Monday to Friday daily tuition – 08:30-15:45, plus 1 hour per week: SVQ Professional Cookery Level 1

Ascentis – Health and Wellbeing – 2 x Stress Awareness Workshops

Open University / Distance Learning: - 1 hour per week for 3 of the 5 wings

Current and future plans for learning and skills, will create more job opportunities for prisoners on release, support prisoner reintegration back into the community, and significantly contribute towards reducing re-offending. 

These plans include:

  • greater emphasis on relationship building and a partnership approach with industry and major employers in the island, to identify and build on the current provision of vocational training / learning and development offered at the Prison

  • blended learning provision in partnership with Highlands College to expand on delivery of current offering to improve employability post release

  • building on existing external third sector and Government Department support - including Customer and Local Services, Back to Work and Skills Jersey, with delivery of essential life skills workshops

  • new curriculum, on academic learning, vocational training, and essential life skills, designed to align with employer skills gaps and deliver a standards-based sequence of planned experiences where prisoners practice and achieve proficiency in content and applied learning skills, and support prisoner reintegration

  • improved timetabling to reduce operational movements and improve quality learning experience for prisoners and improve outcomes

  • building on existing volunteer mentorship peer learning programme for 1:2:1 and group work
