Mortality statistics and causes of death (FOI)

Statistics on the number of deaths per month as well as the age and cause of those deaths over the last two years up until present

The total number of registered deaths (per month and age) are reported annually by the Superintendent Registrar in her Annual Statement and Article 23 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has therefore been applied.  The Annual Statements for 2019 to 2020 can be found at the following link:

The Mortality Report provides details of the cause of deaths in Jersey in 2019 can be found here Jersey Mortality Statistics 2019 (gov.je). Article 23 of the Freedom of information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied.

The Mortality Report for 2020 is due to be published within the next 12 weeks. Article 36 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 had been applied.

Mortality statistics are published by the Superintendent Registrar every week on a Thursday and can be found at the following link: Public Weekly Deaths Report.pdf (gov.je). Article 23 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied.

The Mortality Report for 2021 and the Superintendent Registrar’s Annual Statement for 2021 will be published in 2022. Article 16 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies as once the data is extracted from its various sources it will need to be fully validated.

Article 16 - A scheduled public authority may refuse to supply information if cost excessive

A scheduled public authority may refuse to supply information if cost excessive (1) A scheduled public authority that has been requested to supply information may refuse to supply the information if it estimates that the cost of doing so would exceed an amount determined in the manner prescribed by Regulations.

Regulation 2 (1) of the Freedom of Information (Costs) (Jersey) Regulations 2014 allows an authority to refuse a request for information where the estimated cost of dealing with the request would exceed the specified amount of the cost limit of £500. This is the estimated cost of one person spending 12.5 working hours in determining whether the department holds the information, locating, retrieving and extracting the information.

Article 23 - Information accessible to applicant by other means

(1) Information is absolutely exempt information if it is reasonably available to the applicant, otherwise than under this Law, whether or not free of charge.

Article 36 - Information intended for future publication

(1) Information is qualified exempt information if, at the time when the request for the information is made, the information is being held by a public authority with a view to its being published within 12 weeks of the date of the request.
