Request

A

How many people have been diagnosed with sepsis in Jersey General Hospital in 2020, 2021 and 2022?

B

How many people have died from a sepsis illness in the same period?

Response

A

The data provided in this response represents all cases where sepsis was confirmed as a diagnosis at presentation or in the course of an admission, irrespective of the reason for attendance at hospital or main condition treated.

Data is derived from reporting by discharge date. As such, patients who were admitted prior to 1 January 2020 but discharged after this date will be included. For the same reason, patients admitted prior to 31 December 2022 but discharged after this date will not be included in the numbers.

Clinical Coding of a patient’s admission is carried out after discharge from hospital. Data is incomplete for the full time period in question, and subsequently, figures may be subject to change as Clinical Coding of admissions continues and completion levels increase.

The table below shows the total number of patients discharged from hospital each year where a patient was diagnosed with sepsis.

All codes that can be indexed under the lead term ‘sepsis’ in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10) were used to extract the data for analysis of sepsis admissions in JGH, as detailed in the document below.

Figures for data held on deaths in 2020 and 2021 are included in the table below. Due to the delays which can sometimes occur with registration of deaths, it is standard for mortality data to be reported in arrears. Data may be affected upon conclusion of any inquests that remain open at the time of reporting. Figures for deaths in 2022 are currently unavailable, as the coded data for the calendar year is incomplete.

Deaths occurring during the calendar year 2022 will be reported on in 2023, as per the Public Health Intelligence publication schedule linked below:

Public Health Intelligence publication release schedule (gov.je)

The figures provided below include deaths occurring in a calendar year in Jersey, plus deaths that occurred overseas to Jersey residents where the body was repatriated to Jersey.

Mortality data is taken from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions documented on the death certificate are coded using the ICD-10. From all of these, a cause of death is determined and codes are attributed for this and any underlying contributing causes, in line with ICD-10 coding standards.

The following ICD-10 categories and codes were included for this analysis of deaths from a sepsis illness:

Sepsis, classified to ICD-10 categories A40 and A41

  • A40: Streptococcal sepsis
  • A41: Other sepsis
  • A39.2: Acute meningococcaemia
  • A39.3: Chronic meningococcaemia
  • A39.4: Meningococcaemia, unspecified
