Request

A

Please advise how many male calves were slaughtered in 2023?

B

Please advise how many pregnant cows were slaughtered in 2023?

C

What weight of soy was imported into the Island 2023?

Response

A

The Government of Jersey did not process any male calves through the abattoir in 2023 so no calves were slaughtered through this process in 2023.

However, it should be noted that 1,367 calves were euthanised, within days of birth, in 2023.

The Government of Jersey does not record the sex of the calf when they are euthanised.

The following definitions were used in relation to the information provided.

  • a bovine calf as an animal under six months in accordance with the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority)
  • the definition of slaughter is an animal killed for food and as such taken through the abattoir process.

B

There were 12 instances of pregnancy detected postmortem of cows processed through the abattoir in 2023.

C

Information on the weight of any type of animal feed imported into the island is not held by the Government of Jersey as this would be a matter between retail outlets and suppliers. Therefore Article 3 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies.
