Traffic accidents caused by poor visibility (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 19 July 2024.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

Please confirm number of road accidents island wide caused by poor visibility, blind spots and concealed access to main roads over the last ten years.

Response

No collisions have been recorded island wide over the last ten years that cited the primary cause as being any of the items referenced in the request.

It should be noted that the States of Jersey Police (‘SOJP’) only record collisions which result in personal injury on their official collision and casualty database, therefore, information regarding damage only collisions is not included.  Therefore, this information is not held and Article 10 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies.

It should be noted that information regarding blind spots, concealed entrances and access are not part of the standard data capture when the SOJP attend a road traffic collision.

However, poor visibility can be recorded as part of “contributory factors”, but this is subjective according to the SOJP officer in attendance.

The collision database does not record whether a convex road traffic safety mirror was available at the time of any collisions.
