Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid surgery (FOI)

Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid surgery (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 28 August 2024.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

Please confirm the number of Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) operations that have failed and have needed removal of the main BAHA implant in the skull during the last three years.

Response

Fewer than five Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) procedures completed in the previous three calendar years at Jersey General Hospital are documented to have subsequently failed.  As numbers are small, disclosure control has been applied to protect individuals from identification, and Article 25 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law has been applied to protect the privacy of individuals.

Cases in scope of the request have been identified using procedure codes attributed for BAHA procedures, including preparatory surgery and attention to fixtures, and a review of documentation in the Electronic Patient Record (EPR).

Any individuals who have had all of their BAHA surgeries since 2020 performed off-island will not be identified from central records.
