Drug offences in schools (FOI)

I would like to make a request under the freedom of information laws.

A

How many pupils have been disciplined from Jersey schools over the last 5 years for drugs offences?

B

How many pupils have been suspended from Jersey schools over the last 5 years for drugs offences?

C

How many pupils have been expelled from Jersey schools over the last 5 years for drugs offences?

D

For each of the above questions could you give details of the school, the pupils attended and the age of the pupil at the time they were expelled/suspended and or disciplined.
I look forward to your response within 20 working days as dictated by the act.

Response

A

17 pupils have been disciplined over the last five years for drugs offences.
This includes detentions, internal suspensions and other actions.

B

24 pupils have been suspended over the last five years for drug offences.
This includes only external suspensions.

C

No pupils have been expelled over the last five years for drug offences.

D

The Education Department is unable to provide a breakdown by school and age of the pupil, of the data supplied above as the numbers are small, and as such, Article 25 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) 2011 Law has been applied to this request.

However, shown below are the ages of the pupils at the time of the offence:

Please note that the table above represents all instances of disciplinary, suspension and exclusion, grouped for 2011 to 2016 and represents all schools.

There are 34 primary, secondary and provision schools in Jersey with around 10,000 students in attendance in any given academic year. The data provided covers five academic years.

Exemptions applied

Article 25 - Personal Information  
(1) Information is absolutely exempt information if it constitutes personal data of which the applicant is the data subject as defined in the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2005.
(2) Information is absolutely exempt information if –
(a) it constitutes personal data of which the applicant is not the data subject as defined in the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2005; and
(b) its supply to a member of the public would contravene any of the data protection principles, as defined in that Law.
