How much was spent by the States in the years 2013, 2014 and 2015, broken down by years and departments, on gifts for visiting dignitaries and gifts taken on overseas visits?

What was the most expensive gift during that time and who was it given to?

Is it possible to provide a full list of what was provided, when, to whom, and by whom, with the associated cost? If not, please provide some examples of the gifts.

Response

This response has been formulated by the Treasury and Resources Department with each States department providing the relevant detail. All gifts provided to all visitors to and from overseas, including the UK, have been included.

The most expensive gift was a silver Jersey milk can valued at £238. This gift was given by the Minister for External Relations to the Japanese Ambassador in 2014.

The following departments did not incur any expenditure in the years 2013 - 2015 in relation to visiting dignitaries or gifts taken overseas:

  • Department for Infrastructure (formerly Transport and Technical Services)
  • non-ministerial departments (excluding States Assembly and its services)
  • Social Security Department
  • Treasury and Resources Department

The following non-ministerial departments do not fall within the scope of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 so have not been included in this response:

  • Bailiff’s Chambers
  • Law Officers’ Department
  • Probation and After-Care Service
