​Please can I request information about delays in ambulance patient transfers to the Emergency Department at the Hospital.

Please provide the following details:

A

The total number of ambulance transfers to the Emergency Department over the past six months.

B

A breakdown of ambulance transfer times over the past six months, specifically:

• The number of patients transferred in under 30 minutes.
• The number of patients transferred within 30 minutes to one hour.
• The number of patients transferred within one to two hours.
• The number of patients transferred within two to three hours.
• The number of patients transferred in over three hours.
• The longest recorded ambulance transfer time during this period.

D

Any internal guidance or protocols regarding acceptable waiting times for ambulance handovers at the Emergency Department.

There were 4,147 ambulance transfers from emergency 999 incidents in the last six months (2024-08-01 to 2025-01-31). This is a count of the number of ambulances which arrive at the Emergency Department, not the number of patients. If two vehicles transported a patient, eg. double crew ambulance requiring support from a leading ambulance paramedic, then both vehicles will be counted. This count also includes any voluntary agency or fire and rescue crews who were supporting SoJAS in responding to 999 emergency calls.

Ambulance handovers at ED are measured from the time that the Ambulance crew arrive at the Emergency Department, to the time that they are clear and available to be allocated to a new call.

The longest ambulance handover during the last six months was 226 minutes.
