How many people in Jersey’s population were diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2015?

Information on the local incidence (new cases) of melanoma which occurred in 2015 will not be available to us for publication until 2018. The department estimates that locating and extracting this data in advance of the report would require more than 12.5 hours of staff time and is therefore refused under the cost limit specified in regulations.

The 2012 to 2014 local cancer incidence data is currently being analysed and the report being drafted. The final report on cancer incidence for 2012 to 2014 (including skin cancer) is expected to be available in November 2016 and will be published on this website.

This shows that between 2009 and 2011 around 370 new cases of skin cancer (non-melanoma and malignant melanoma) were diagnosed each year.

Of these around 330 cases a year were non-melanoma diagnoses (reported as skin cancer, C44, in the report) and there were no deaths from this type of cancer over the same period. 

Around 40 new cases per year were diagnosed as malignant melanoma (C43), the most aggressive form of skin cancer, which accounts for almost all skin cancer deaths. Over the three-year period there were a total of 13 deaths from malignant melanoma.

Regulation 2 (1) of the Freedom of Information (Costs) (Jersey) Regulations 2014 allows an authority to refuse a request for information where the estimated cost of dealing with the request would exceed the specified amount of the cost limit of £500. This is the estimated cost of one person spending 12.5 working hours in determining whether the department holds the information, locating, retrieving and extracting the information.
