Summary

The Wildlife (Jersey) Law 2021 is the primary legislation for nature conservation purposes in Jersey and provides a legal framework for the protection of Jersey’s wildlife.

The Law confers different levels of protection on wild animals, wild birds and wild plants, as set out in Article 5 and the Schedules to the Law specifying various categories of wildlife and the protections appliable to each.

A periodic review of the Schedules to the Wildlife Law is required to ensure that adequate protection is afforded to species to enable the Island’s international obligations to be met and as an accurate reflection of species’ local and international conservation status. The review results are used to make changes to the Schedules and could include adding, removing or amending the level of protection of a species.

The first Quinquennial Review of Schedules 1 to 8 of the Wildlife Law (QQR) was undertaken between August 2023 and October 2024.

The report outlines the findings of the first QQR, together with a set of recommendations for amendments to Schedules to the Wildlife Law.
