Register of Buildings and Sites of Architectural, Archaeological and Historical Importance: Assessment of Halcyon House Farm, West Hill, St. Helier
This report has been prepared by the Jersey Heritage Trust as part of its responsibility under a Service Level Agreement to provide reports and recommendations to the Minister for Planning and Environment on the registration of historic buildings and sites.
The Planning and Environment Department requested on 15 June 2007 that the Jersey Heritage Trust assess the architectural, historical and other interests of Halcyon House Farm ahead of discussions with the Ministerial Registration and Listing Advisory Group.

Relevant interests of the site (also see assessment form)
The site comprises a mid-19th century house with a range of later farm buildings to the west. The house was converted to States housing in 1985 and the outbuildings converted to light industrial use.
Significant alterations were made to the house at that time including demolition of the four chimneystacks and the removal of the front door and portico. The single-storey and 2-storey outbuildings have also undergone significant alterations, including changes to openings and fenestration.
The biggest of the outbuildings - a late 19th century storage shed - appears out of scale with the rest of the farm group, with an almost ‘warehouse’ appearance including a series of large loading doors on the east side.
Advice received (MRLAG or others)
The former Jersey Building Heritage Sub-Committee assessed the large outbuilding at its meeting on 22 January 2001 and concluded that although it is of an unusual design and scale, it failed to meet the criteria for registration.
MRLAG considered the interests of the farm group at its meeting on 9 July 2007. Members unanimously agreed that the alterations made to the main house preclude it from registration. It was further agreed that the single-storey and 2-storey outbuildings fail to meet the criteria for registration given the alterations made to them. Finally the group advised that the large outbuilding is only of modest interest, and coupled with the erosion of the historic character and context of the farm group as a whole, falls short of registration.
JHT recommendation
None of the buildings that comprise the former Halcyon House Farm meet the criteria for inclusion on the Historic Buildings Register.
Justification relating to criteria
It is proposed that the buildings that comprised the former Halcyon House Farm do not adequately retain their historic form and detail, and so fail to meet the criteria for registration.
