Registering as a doctor or general practitioner

Medical Practitioner registration

You must be registered under Jersey Law before you can start working as a doctor or general practitioner (GP). Regardless of whether you'll be working on a long-term, short-term or temporary work basis.

The registration process is overseen by the Jersey Care Commission. Find registration and guidance on the Jersey Care Comission website.

List of approved general practitioners

All GPs must apply to be on the Jersey Performers List which is a list of approved general practitioners. You need to be on the UK General Practitioner Register to be included on the list.

To apply, complete the Performers List application form and provide:

  • a copy of your Medical Practitioner Registration Certificate from the Jersey Care Commission
  • a copy of your photo ID
  • a copy of your UK General Medical Council (GMC) certificate of registration

Once you’re on the list, the Primary Care Governance Team will automatically arrange a meeting for your induction. You need to attend your induction before you can start consultations with patients.

The induction includes an overview of GP related benefits and the issuing of your:

  • prescriber number
  • prescription pads

  • practice code

You’ll need to provide a copy of your signature at the induction.

The scheme covers:

Your practice can apply to be part of the Health Access Scheme. This means you can claim subsidised payments from the government for your patients who are members of the scheme.

Email GPHAS@gov.je for more information and to apply.

Government’s programmes

The government runs certain patient services and programmes with the help of medical practices, including:

  • childhood immunisation
  • Cervical Screening
  • Quality Improvement Framework (similar to UK QoF)

If you want your practice to be included in any of these programmes and receive funding, you’ll need to apply separately. Your practice will not be automatically included. Email Samantha Sugden, Policy Principal, for more information.

Government of Jersey health store

Some items you need for your practice may be available to purchase from the Government of Jersey’s health store. You’ll need to set-up an account to purchase any goods. Email hssprocurement@gov.je for stock availability and cost.

Revalidating your General Medical Council (GMC) licence

Each doctor will be assigned a local responsible officer who will make a recommendation to the GMC.

Responsible officers will be assigned according to the following classes:

  • general practitioners
  • doctors employed by Health aand Social Services Department
  • independent medical practitioners
  • medical practitioners with a prescribed UK connection

If you practise partly in Jersey

If you practise partly in Jersey but have a connection with a UK designated body, your UK responsible officer will make the revalidation recommendation to the GMC.

A Jersey responsible officer will be assigned to you but their responsibilities will be limited to the investigation of any ‘fitness to practise’ issues that might occur while you’re working in Jersey.

Legal requirements

As a medical practitioner the law requires that you:

  • hold a current licence to practise with the GMC
  • provide more detailed information about qualifications, employment details and anything that may be relevant about your ability to practise
  • verify any personal information held about you regularly. If you don’t respond to a request for verification, your name will be removed from the register. It's important to inform us of any changes to your contact details
