Public Health Jersey
The role of Public Health in Jersey is to:
- prevent illness and support Islanders to live longer, healthier lives
- protect Islanders from infectious diseases and other harms
- support healthier choices by implementing policies and promoting good health behaviours
The average health of the people living in Jersey compares well to the UK but recent reports have shown that some Islanders are at a higher risk of becoming unwell. Where you live, your economic status, and your education level, can all play a part in your health and wellbeing. These factors are known as the wider determinants of health and vary from community to community.
The health of ourselves and others is everyone’s responsibility. Through our collective efforts of vaccination, sanitation, health screening, and public awareness campaigning, we can:
- help reduce healthcare costs
- increase life expectancy
- create a healthier, more resilient Jersey community
Our services and responsibilities include:
Our strategy
We aim to maintain and improve the health of the whole population by working with other departments and in the private sector through encouraging, influencing, and leading policy and strategy.
Our Public Health strategy says what we will do over the next 5 years to improve the physical and mental health of Islanders.
We developed this new strategy with help from:
- Islanders
- charities
- community groups
- Government
We looked at local health data and studied what other countries have done to help their citizens stay well.
We brought all this together to give us our 6 strategic priorities:
- understand
- protect
- improve
- work together
- innovate
- sustain
