HPV vaccine for men who have sex with men (MSM)

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is available for MSM who are up to and including 45 years of age.  MSM can have the vaccine at the GUM (sexual health) and infectious disease clinic at Jersey’s General Hospital.

If you would like to be vaccinated, let your clinic doctor or nurse know. There is no charge to have the vaccine. The clinic times drop-in services is available for men Tuesday 5pm to 6.30pm and Thursday 5pm to 6.30pm.

You should have the HPV vaccine before you become sexually active. But, the protection is still good even if you receive the vaccine later.  

Why it's important for MSM to have the HPV vaccine

HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. Some HPV types can cause genital warts. Other types of HPV can lead to certain cancers if infection is persistent, such as anal, throat and penile cancer. 

MSM are known to have an increased risk of HPV infection and disease. HPV vaccination is a very effective way to reduce your risk of genital warts immediately. It can also reduce your risk of developing HPV associated cancer in the future. 

It's especially important for those who are living with HIV and as well as in MSM who have multiple sexual partners. 

Number of vaccine doses required 

We give the HPV vaccine as a course of three injections over a period of four to 12 months. To be protected, you need to have all three doses. 

Vaccine safety 

The vaccine is called Gardasil and it's very safe. It meets the rigorous safety standards required for it to be used in the UK and other European countries. It has been used in England since autumn 2012.
