The Chief Minister, Senator Frank Walker has submitted a response, on behalf of the States of Jersey, to the French inquiry into a third nuclear reactor at Flamanville.
Senator Walker’s covering letter stated: “The government of Jersey is pleased to have the opportunity to offer their observations on the proposed development of a third nuclear reactor at Flamanville. To establish a view on the proposals, we have invited comments from the public of Jersey and commissioned the advice of two specialists who have expertise in the field of nuclear safety.
The government’s report represents a consensus of the views expressed, and has been endorsed by the Island’s Council of Ministers.
In summary, the government of Jersey has some concerns about the proposed development and we are looking for further information on the safety aspects of the design. We also look forward to developing an effective direct working relationship with your officials regarding emergency planning, radiological protection and notification of potential incidents.
Without further information or evidence on the safety issues raised in the attached report, the government of Jersey must maintain its formal objection to the proposed development.”
The submission was sent to the French inquiry in time to meet the 31 August deadline for responses. It was subsequently published on the States of Jersey website.
