States Departments have been working closely together to improve the look of Victoria Avenue, which is a key feature of Jersey . It is the showcase where several of the Island ’s major events are staged, attracting thousands of people. In particular, the Battle of Flowers, which this year has received substantially increased funding from the Economic Development Committee, is a major tourist event for the Island and receives much media attention. It is considered vital that the Avenue looks at its best.
The first phase of the programme is to paint the lampposts on the central reservation, which are no longer in an acceptable condition. Once this has been completed flags and banners will be put up.
The painting work, arranged by the Transport and Technical Services Department (TTS), will start on Monday 22 May at 8am and will continue for up to 3 weeks. Mobile hoists will be used and this will mean that a section of the outer lane of the westbound carriageway will be obstructed and traffic management measures will be in place. In order to avoid traffic delays for westbound commuters going home in the evening, all works will finish between 3pm and 4 pm each day.
TTS will monitor the work as it progresses along the avenue from West Park to Bel Royal and will not only manage the traffic flow but will also try to reduce the time taken to complete the project by reviewing the situation and starting earlier in the morning if this is possible and appropriate.
“Victoria Avenue is used for several high profile events during the course of the year and also acts as the main route into town, particularly from the Airport,” said Guy de Faye , Minister for Transport and Technical Services. “It is important that it looks the part and presents the best possible image to tourists and members of the public alike. We are working closely with other departments to see how improvements can be made to Victoria Avenue and the painting of the lamp columns is just part of the overall project.”
