To ensure that the Retail Prices Index (RPI) remains representative of consumer spending patterns the items that are priced in compiling the index and their associated weights are reviewed approximately every five years, following the completion of a Household Expenditure Survey.
The report published on 28th March 2007 on the Review of the Basket of Goods and Services describes the review process and explains how and why the various items in the RPI basket are chosen.
