On Friday 26 October, Senator Philip Ozouf, Minister for Economic Development, hosted a meeting with leading organisations in the field of e-commerce and intellectual property locally and internationally. The opportunities arising from the development of improved e-commerce and intellectual property legislation are being carefully considered to establish whether such development would be beneficial in driving economic activity.
Several elements are being considered to deliver economic benefit to Jersey and are being designed to boost the Island’s intellectual property and e-commerce sectors.
A complete review of the Island’s intellectual property legislation is now underway to ensure that Jersey laws are fair, trusted and balanced for both businesses and individuals.
The meeting has been instrumental in advising Jersey what it needs to do to position itself as a jurisdiction of choice for e-commerce business. The Minister and his team will now consider the advice to ensure that it is good for Jersey, good for business and good for consumers.
As a result of the conference a number of working parties will be established involving international and local experts to help advise the Minister on next steps.
Senator Ozouf says, “In addition to further developing the Island’s position in the financial services sector, as we look to the future, Jersey must encourage and support further diversification in our economy. In accordance with this objective, industry and Government have identified the convergence of intellectual property and e-commerce as a major potential future contributor to Jersey’s economic growth. To achieve this we will continue to work with the industry to improve our intellectual property and e-commerce legislation. Today’s meeting has been highly successful and is the start of the reform process”.
