Following the recent granting of Planning in Principle for the proposed new Energy from Waste Facility at La Collette, the Transport and Technical Services Department is establishing a Community Liaison Group to ensure that local resident’s and businesses issues are fully identified and properly addressed within the developing proposals for the Plant.
Tenders for the plant, which will replace the aging Bellozanne incinerator with a modern efficient waste disposal facility, were issued on 1st November 2007 and are due back at the end of February 2008. The preferred solution will then be presented for consideration by the States before detailed planning consent is sought in the summer of 2008.
The first meeting of the group, which is proposed for early January 2008, will include presentations to help attendees to understand the planning and technical requirements which have been set for the plant and the controls that will be in place both during the construction and in the operational phases, but members of the group will also be encouraged to raise any concerns or issues that they may have with the proposals.
Membership of the group will be open to any local member of the community to attend. A Public Notice requesting nominations for the Group will appear in the Jersey Evening Post this week.
Minister for Transport and Technical Services - Deputy Guy de Faye - said “The granting of planning consent in principle was another key step towards replacing the old Bellozanne incinerator with a new, safe, clean and modern plant that meets 21st century standards. Given the severe difficulties we are having keeping the current Bellozanne incinerator operational, Jersey needs now more than ever a reliable means of disposing of its rubbish for the future.
It is vitally important, however, that we take into account as far as possible the concerns of local residents and business people when developing our plans for the replacement Energy from Waste facility. I am therefore delighted that the Community Liaison Group will give local people the opportunity to ensure their issues are raised and I encourage people to come forward to understand for themselves what an important facility this will be for Jersey. ”
