The Social Security Minister, Senator Paul Routier, has issued three draft Codes of Practice to be made under the Employment Relations (Jersey) Law 2007, and is inviting written representations on the codes.
The Employment Relations Law relates to collective disputes in the workplace so will apply in particular to employers, employer associations, employee associations and trade unions in Jersey. The three codes relate to;
1. The recognition of trade unions for collective bargaining purposes
2. Balloting for action and conduct in collective employment disputes
3. Methods of resolving collective disputes.
Senator Routier commented, “A considerable amount of consultation has been undertaken on employment relations issues since 2001 and this is the third round of consultation on the draft codes of practice. I will be happy to give due consideration to any additional comments from all affected parties.
The codes supplement the legislation and reflect ‘best practice’ and reasonable procedures. They will provide a process that is balanced and appropriate for Jersey, which will encourage discussion and the resolution of disputes by both parties.”
Following the consideration of any comments submitted to the Minister, the ensuing codes of practice will be made available to the public. The Employment Relations Law itself has received Privy Council assent and the States will be asked to bring the Law and the codes into force next year.
Representations on the draft codes must be received by the Department no later than Thursday 18th October 2007 and may be made either in writing to Kate Morel, PO Box 55, La Motte St, St Helier, JE4 8PE, by email to k.morel@gov.je, or may be made in person to the Minister by arrangement.
