Deep Groundwater Investigation - ageing of groundwater

15 February 2007

15 February 2007

News Release

The awaited radiocarbon dating of the older component of groundwater sampled from the two test boreholes indicates that the groundwater at the depth of the ‘predicted’ streams at St Catherine was 4000-5000 years old and was a few hundred years old at La Rocque.

The results mean that the groundwater fell as rain more recently than the last Ice-Age. The analysis of isotopes and conclusions previously published in the BGS-Entec report remain valid; ‘that there is no evidence to suggest that either the shallow or deep groundwater beneath Jersey has a source that is located outside the Island’.
