Transport and Technical Services (TTS) deny allegations that recent operations at the Ash Pits at La Collette have caused any danger to the public or the environment. However, the department takes any complaint seriously and will be making a thorough investigation.
It has been alleged that incinerator ash that was stored at a temporary site at La Collette had been allowed to overspill into the sea. However this ash, which was located on an existing specially prepared ash pit, had been surrounded on three sides by high earth banks and on the fourth side, which was the access route, the ash was covered with ground to prevent escape. The department believes all necessary precautions were taken.
As soon as a new ash pit, which had suffered delays in construction, was finished, the ash was transferred and stored in the normal way.
The department has had many years experience of managing the incinerator ash without incident. An internal investigation will start straight away and TTS will fully cooperate with any external investigation undertaken.
“I am surprised by this allegation,” said
John Richardson
, Chief Officer of Transport and Technical Services. “Great care is always taken within any hazardous waste within the department.”
