Deputy
Guy de Faye
, the Minister For Transport and Technical Services, is delighted to announce that after four years of effort, Driver and Vehicle Standards has managed to secure an agreement with all of the eight Australian States and Territories to exchange car and motorcycle driving licences.
This is good news for those emigrating to
Australia
who hold
Jersey
driving licences and have to obtain Australian driving licences as they can now exchange their
Jersey
car and motorcycle entitlements without any further tests being undertaken.
The Australian Roads Authority, Austroads, confirmed the new arrangements would be in place in
Australia
with immediate effect.
To accept Australian car and motorcycle licences in exchange for
Jersey
licences, requires a minor change to our legislation which will take a month or two to complete. In the meantime, any resident, who currently holds an Australian driving licence and has booked a driving test in
Jersey
, is advised to contact Driver and Vehicle Standards for further advice.
Deputy de Faye would like to thank ex Senator Jean Le Maistre who raised this matter in personal contacts with the Speaker of the Australian Senate at conferences of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
