Of the 296 vehicles that passed through a St. Brelade road check four vehicles were impounded, one of which was destined straight for the dump.
Nine drivers were issued with defect notices, eight drivers have to present driving and insurance documents at Police Headquarters and a further nine drivers must notify Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) of a change in registered keeper details.
One small commercial vehicle, with a completely corroded chassis, was immediately scrapped and towed away to be dumped. Another small commercial vehicle and a private car, both with defects including brakes and tyres, were impounded to DVS for inspection. Reports will be submitted to the Police for consideration of prosecution. A scooter, impounded for a defective tyre and wheel bearing is likely to be scrapped.
Nine drivers were issued with defect notices requiring them to present their vehicle at DVS, with defects rectified. Defects included steering, exhaust systems, oil leaks, mirrors and lighting.
Eight drivers must present driving licences and insurance at the Police Station and a further nine drivers need to inform DVS of change of registration details.
The road check was conducted between 7.30 and

by officers from DVS, joined by the States of Jersey Police Roads Policing Unit and the Honorary Police of St. Brelade, outside the parish hall at St. Aubin.
Alan Muir
, Inspector of Motor Traffic, commented, “
It seems that not only are some individuals adopting a casual approach to the maintenance of their vehicles, but some are also failing to keep their driving and vehicle documentation up to date. Any change of registration details must be notified to DVS within seven days".
“It’s disappointing that some road users allow their vehicles to get into such poor condition that they become a potential threat to themselves and others”, said Transport and Technical Services Minister, Deputy
Guy de Faye
. Adding, “Just because
Jersey
does not have regular compulsory vehicle inspection, it doesn’t mean that owners will get away with operating defective vehicles. DVS road checks will, almost certainly, get them in the end.”
