Transport and Technical Services are conducting a full check of the island’s beaches today at low tide to determine the extent of the build up of sea lettuce. Once the assessment has been made, the Department will determine what action needs to be taken and has a work crew standing by to commence removal immediately.
It has now been three or four years since
Jersey
experienced an unacceptable amount of sea lettuce on its beaches. The problem tends to affect only the south and east facing coasts and it has also been known to affect beaches in
France
.
In the past the only viable option to manage the sea lettuce build up has been to move it down to the waterline, which is a labour intensive and time consuming operation but does mean that the sea lettuce is kept ‘fresh’ and is not able to decompose and become more of a nuisance.
