Transport and Technical Services is undertaking a major sewer and drainage upgrade project in the Val Plaisant area starting in November and running through to the end of 2008. The project is a complex one. It will enable the system to cope with the increased loads that have occurred since the pipes were first built and to more efficiently manage the flow by separating the surface rain water, which can run into the sea, from domestic foul sewage which needs to go to Bellozanne for treatment.
The project will be carried out in three phases.
In order to allow the laying of the required sewer pipework, it is necessary for other utility companies to divert some of their existing services. The first phase to allow these enabling works, starts on Friday 9 November and will require
Victoria Street
to be closed for approximately one week. The work then moves into Val Plaisant between
Victoria Street
and
Windsor Road
for approximately six weeks, requiring Val Plaisant to be closed during this period and some traffic disruption in
Great Union Road
. Drivers will be directed around the works via short alternative routes.
The second phase of the enabling works requires the complete closure of the
David Place
/
Midvale Road
/ Val Plaisant junction for a period of approximately four to six weeks. This work is to commence on
Monday 7 January 2008
. Advance warnings and diversions will be posted.
On completion of the enabling works, the third phase, the main pipe laying contract will start, subject to no delays, around mid February 2008 and run for approximately 52 weeks. Starting in Val Plaisant, at the
Victoria Street
junction, the work will progress up as far as
Clarendon Road
. For most of this length, two pipes for foul and surface water sewers, will be installed at depths varying from 2 to 4.5 metres. This will mean Val Plaisant will have to be closed to through traffic. Access to premises will be maintained at all times.
TTS will shortly be appointing a Contractor for the main drainage works. This Construction Team will liaise and co-operate to ensure that nuisance and disruption is minimised and managed. Where inconvenience is inevitable, residents, the travelling public and businesses will be provided with clear information in advance of the work. Advertisements and signs identifying the extent of the works and diversions will be posted leading up to the works.
