New Guidance for Rooftops

02 May 2008

The Minister for Planning and Environment has released details of new policy guidance relating to the approval of plant and equipment on new and existing buildings. Senator Cohen said, "I have been concerned for some time at the unsightly addition of plant and extract equipment on the roofs of Jersey's buildings. This can spoil the appearance of those buildings and does nothing for the town. This new policy is part of our ongoing efforts to significantly improve Jersey's built environment. Attractive roofscapes are a key to good planning and this new policy will deliver better buildings."

The Senator also reminded architects that he has granted more generous planning permissions whilst striving for excellence in new design. "Whilst I have permitted taller buildings in St. Helier, I do expect architects to consider the full picture when designing schemes." he said. "It is very disappointing when a permit for a site is granted for a set amount of floor space, only to discover that the client wishes to add what amounts to another storey of development in the form of roof plant. I want architects to consider the requirements of the building at the outset and to look at ways in which buildings can be more responsive toward the environment. That means looking at solutions other than filling the roof with equipment."
