A meeting has been held to decide how best to co-ordinate continuing support for those people affected by Monday’s fire in St Peter.
A strategic co-ordination group made up of representatives from the parish of St Peter, the emergency services and the States departments who’ve been helping those affected, met to discuss how best to organise the medium and long term needs of those left homeless by the fire.
The States Emergency Planning Officer, Mike Long, said – “Anyone who needs help should call Customer Services Centre at Cyril le Marquand House and the staff there will put you in touch with the relevant department.
“St Peter’s Parish Hall has been answering many calls from people wanting to donate money and goods to help the people who lived in the property affected, and the Constable will continue to co-ordinate the fund. It is already growing fast - in one day more than £2,000 has been donated.
“In the immediate aftermath of the fire, the States organised the re-housing of 53 people, through the work of staff from Tourism, and with help from private hoteliers and guest house owners. Those 53 people are now being contacted to ensure they find a longer term solution to their housing needs.”
• Anyone affected by the fire, who still needs help, should call the Customer Services Centre at Cyril le Marquand House. on 445500 (opening times below)
• If you want to donate money to help those affected you can do so at any branch of the Channel Islands Co-op. The Co-op will then pass on the donations to St Peter’s parish hall (The Co-op will be collecting across the Channel Islands, not just in Jersey)
• The parish of St Peter will collect and administer the donations as they arrive. The distribution of the monies collected will be organised at a later date.
• Clothing already donated is being distributed from St Thomas Church Hall in Val Plaisant, St Helier from 10am this morning. Tel 720235 if you’d like to find out more. You are asked not to donate any more clothing as there is already enough for those affected.
• Anyone with furniture to offer should call St Peter’s Parish Hall on 481236 from 9am-4pm and leave their name, contact number and details of the items they have on offer. Please don’t take furniture to the parish hall.
• Anyone who’s suffering psychologically from the emergency will be referred for help through the usual channels
The co-ordinating group will meet again tomorrow (Fri 18th) to ensure arrangements keep pace with the needs of the people affected.
