Transport and Technical Services (TTS) are pleased to announce that a growing number of local businesses are now running vehicles on biodiesel created from the island’s waste cooking oil.
Jersey Telecom, Jersey Post and D.B. Malorey Limited are some of the businesses already enjoying the benefits of the local biodiesel with TTS soon to be added to the customer list.
A key advantage is that biodiesel is more environmentally friendly than normal diesel as it produces lower emissions. It is also economically attractive to large fuel consumers as it is cheaper than normal diesel so customers can calculate immediate cost savings.
TTS awarded the contract for the collection and conversion of cooking oil to biodiesel to Channel Island Biodiesel Products Limited in 2007. The company is responsible for collecting approximately 200 tonnes of oil each year from restaurants and cafés and reselling the recycled biodiesel to local bulk users such as haulage and transport companies.
Steve Harrison, Director of Channel Island Biodiesel Products Limited, said ‘Biodiesel is relatively new to Jersey but it is a well established alternative fuel in the UK and in Europe. Any business that runs diesel vehicles can benefit, even blending biodiesel with regular mineral diesel saves money and reduces emissions.’
Andy Holmes, Health and Safety Manager, Jersey Telecom said: “Jersey Telecom operates a fleet of over 100 vehicles, many of which usually run on diesel. Converting to biodiesel makes sense, not only because of the clear cost savings but because it has strong environmental benefits: it reduces our use of diesel which emits pollutants and makes use of an everyday product that would otherwise have entered the waste stream.”
Andy Jehan, Postal Services Manager, Jersey Post said: “Delivering to over 38,000 postal addresses on the island requires a large fleet of reliable vehicles. We are continually looking at ways to minimise the impact our operations have on the environment and the opportunity to run locally produced biodiesel fitted perfectly with our strategy to reduce fossil fuel usage.”
Daren Malorey, Director, D.B. Malorey Limited said: “Using biodiesel will not only save our company money, it will also compliment The Sonnenkraft Advanced Solar energy side of our business, saving more energy and so preserving our wonderful Island for future generations.”
John Rive, Recycling Officer, TTS said: “It is fantastic that we are able to turn a difficult waste stream, such as used cooking oil, into a renewable fuel that has numerous benefits. I hope that the customer base continues to grow as more companies see the opportunity to improve their environmental performance by switching to biodiesel.”
